David Smith's interest in jewellery started at school, developed into a degree at Birmingham Polytechnic and finally after a brief period as a trade designer, into his own enterprise located in Brighton.
His initial designs in copper with silver and gold hand-worked finishes were chosen for the Design Council Index and their shop. This connection expanded his notoriety and contacts in both the UK and abroad with offers of design and production work from companies as diverse as Next, Laura Ashley, Rayne Shoes and Mulberry Company.
On changing his style to casting in pewter and building on its versatility, David was asked to design and produce a range of jewellery for John Richmond based on the George cross to high acclaim. Two more collections later and David was looking for new challenges.
Sensing a shift in public preferences, David returned to producing jewellery in precious metals and stones combining his experience and skills in production techniques and hand-made jewellery. It was a shrewd move as from his workshop in Brighton to a move to Lewes and the Star Brewery, he now has two retail outlets in Lewes and Haywards Heath while still maintaining a full selection of jewellery for his ever-loyal wholesale customers.
David is a member of the Sussex Guild and regularly participates at regional craft fairs and the Spring and Autumn Fair.
